Direct VS Indirect
What is the advantage of designing a track that holds heat trace cables so closely together? None! In fact, the reason for this design flat is because the system relied on indirect heat transfer to heat a roof edge, hence more heat trace cables are needed to perform equally to a system that relied on direct heat transfer, HotEdge. The difference is significant for total system cost and energy to operate; 3 heat trace cables in an aluminum metal track design (indirect) promise 18 inches of melt back when 2 heat trace cables promise 20 inches of melt back with a HotEdge design (direct).
